Someone asked in a comment on Sylvia’s latest blog post about whether, in a disaster, aquaponic water is safe to drink. Given the floods we’ve just copped in C…
Any aquaponic system will have water in it. One of the main benefits is that the water is not destroyed by the process, unlike hydroponic reservoirs where the chemicals are poison.
In this article the idea of using the water in the aquaponic tank as drinking aquaponic water in an emergency are discussed. While the answer is a no, for long term, it is interesting that the water may be OK for the shorter term…another verification of the safety of the system as a whole.
There are bacteria in the water, and it is dechlorinated so they may be a problem, but in the face of disaster and extreme thirst, the reservoir cold be a lifesaver
